Godlingston Heath: Pillboxes or Range Observation Posts?

On Godlingston Heath at Studland in Dorset there are the remains of eight unique hexagonal concrete structures. Referred to as either range observation posts or pillboxes, their original purpose has often been debated. This article intends to provide definitive evidence to prove exactly what the buildings are and how they fitted into Studland’s historic landscape.

A Brief History of the Construction and Life of a Pillbox

Of all the pillboxes which have survived at Studland, one stands out as being the most famous. Below Redend Point and the later Fort Henry observation post is a FW3/25 ‘Armco’ pillbox of 1940 origin. It is by far the most photographed of pillboxes at Studland and has made multiple television appearances, together with being referenced in some of the only published research on Studland to date. This article will try to address what is really known about this building to explore how it was constructed, used, and survived post war.
